In July, Serbian daily newspapers committed 30 percent more violations of the Journalists’ Code of Ethics compared to the same month last year, with the majority related to truthful reporting, the Press Council warned on Tuesday.
The Council said in a press release that nine dailies (Politika, Novosti, Danas, Blic, Nova, Alo, Kurir, Informer, and Srpski Telegraf) violated the Code of Ethics 1,361 times during July. This marks a significant increase from the 959 breaches recorded in the same period last year across these media outlets.
The Press Council urged journalists and editors to adhere to professional and ethical journalism standards, highlighting the risks of media content that contradicts the core principles outlined in the Serbian Journalists’ Code of Ethics.
“Inaccurate and unprofessional reporting can further escalate tensions, spread hate speech, and encourage aggressive behavior, while also threatening the dignity and privacy of individuals featured in stories, which is particularly dangerous during societal crises,” said the Press Council.
