The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) said the Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM) missed an opportunity to make election monitoring more comprehensive, adding that only four of the eight council members supported adding Informer to the monitoring list.
Ivana Stevanovic of the Slavko Curuvija Foundation said she was not surprised by the decision, arguing that Informer should have been under constant monitoring and citing its record of court rulings for violations of media law.
REM council member Milos Garic defended the decision, saying monitoring Informer could overburden the regulator’s monitoring staff. He also said he would not take part in what he called a campaign against Informer or any other media outlet.
REM Council member Rodoljub Sabic said the vote could only be explained by an order “from the top,” alleging that members had reversed their earlier positions.
