The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) Council decided, after two and a half years, not to take action against Pink TV following a complaint filed by the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS/IJAS).
In a letter received by NUNS on Friday, REM said: “At its meeting on November 1, 2024, the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) concluded that there are no grounds to initiate proceedings ex officio against the media service provider Pink Media Group d.o.o. – Pink TV.”
NUNS noted that it filed the complaint with REM in June 2022, accusing Pink TV of violating the Law on Electronic Media and the Regulation on the Protection of Human Rights in the provision of media services.
The complaint claimed that Pink TV had breached the Law on Electronic Media, which prohibits broadcasters from airing content that promotes drug addiction, violence, crime, or other illegal behavior.
The law also stipulates that media services must be provided in a manner that respects human rights, especially human dignity, and that degrading treatment and scenes of violence or torture must not be broadcast.
NUNS also identified three violations of the Regulation on the Protection of Human Rights in Media Services.
Nevertheless, the REM Council concluded that the violence shown on Pink TV was not sufficiently brutal to justify launching proceedings.
