RSF official says EC should speak out about media situation in Serbia

A senior Reporters Without Borders (RSF) official told Serbian journalists visiting Brussels that the European Commission should speak up about the worrying media situation in the country.

RSF Representative to European Institutions Julie Majerczak said that the European Commission should be louder and more determined in terms of the Serbian media scene. She said the current situation is worrying and recalled the many assaults by the police on journalists during protests. She voiced concern about possible dramatic incidents.

According to Majerczak, RSF has informed the European Commission about the situation in Serbia a number of times. She said the Commission has been indecisive in facing Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to date but added that the Commission is realizing that it’s probably time to say enough and maybe stop some of its financing to Belgrade.

She said the RSF will continue warning the Commission about the media situation in Serbia.
