The SafeJournalists Network expresses deep concern over a derogatory and homophobic article targeting journalist Isa Myzyraj and the Association of Journalists of Albania (AGSH). This attack follows AGSH’s dedicated efforts to document and raise awareness about the ongoing situation involving the police blockage of the Focus Media Group outlets and subsequent events.
Such language and personal attacks are unacceptable, particularly when directed at journalists who are fulfilling their professional duty to defend media freedom and the public’s right to know. These tactics not only attempt to discredit their work but also foster a hostile climate for the free exercise of journalism in Albania.
We call on the Commissioner for Protection from Discrimination, the People’s Advocate, the Alliance Against Hate Speech, and all relevant public institutions to urgently investigate the discriminatory nature of this article and to take concrete measures, including a strong public condemnation of such rhetoric, to ensure that hate speech and personal attacks have no place in public discourse.
We stand in full solidarity with Isa Myzyraj, AGSH, and all journalists and watchdogs in Albania who work under pressure and intimidation to ensure the public has access to accurate, timely, and independent information.
Every attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, the public interest, and fundamental human rights.
