The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the threatening and defamatory rhetoric used by Sami Kurteshi, a member of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Kosovo, against the Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AJK) and the Network of Women Journalists of Kosovo (NWJK). We call on relevant institutions to take immediate action to ensure the safety of journalists and uphold media freedom.
In a public statement, Kurteshi referred to AJK and NWJK as an “Alliance of Criminal Groups.” Such inflammatory language delegitimizes the vital work of journalist organizations, exposes them to potential harm, and creates a hostile environment for media professionals, particularly women journalists, who already face disproportionate threats.
“We are appalled the ruling Vetëvendosje continues to be unbothered by the sheer scandalous behavior of its Central Election Commission member, Sami Kurteshi towards the media and journalists.” claims Xhemajl Rexha, Chair of AJK board. “The accusations are of a great concern, and endanger journalists’ safety, and VV should immediately dismiss Kurteshi from the this important state institution”
Kurteshi is a high-ranking public official appointed to an institution crucial to Kosovo’s democratic integrity. His words carry significant weight and should be treated with utmost seriousness by law enforcement authorities.
The SafeJournalists Network urges the State Prosecutor to investigate Sami Kurteshi’s statement. If he possesses any evidence supporting his allegations, they must be formally examined. If not, his baseless accusations must be publicly condemned, as tolerating such rhetoric sets a dangerous precedent and further endangers media professionals.
Allowing unfounded and defamatory attacks by public officials contributes to a climate of fear and self-censorship. It undermines journalists’ ability to operate freely and safely, jeopardizing democracy and public interest.
We call on Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the ruling party to distance themselves from and publicly denounce Kurteshi’s dangerous rhetoric. Political leaders must ensure that their officials do not engage in verbal attacks that put journalists at risk.
The SafeJournalists Network stands in full solidarity with AJK and NWJK and will inform national and international stakeholders about this alarming development.
Any attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, public interest, and fundamental human rights.
