The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the attack that took place last night at the offices of “Infomax” in Skopje, North Macedonia, during a live broadcast, when an unknown individual forcibly entered the media outlet’s premises, interrupted the live broadcast and seriously endangered the safety of journalists and the entire editorial team.
According to available information, the attacker arrived by taxi in front of the building and began aggressively banging on the locked entrance door, which was secured with a code. Shortly thereafter, using force, they entered the courtyard of the editorial office, broke down the door, entered the building, and attempted to reach the studio. In the meantime, one of the employed journalists went outside the studio, and the person who made the intrusion directed several insults and verbal threats towards him.
This violent intrusion in addition to clear suspicion of committing multiple crimes, also caused a forced interruption of the live broadcast, directly obstructing journalists from performing their professional duties and constituting a serious attack on freedom of information, which is punishable by Macedonian Criminal Code and can mean prison sentence. According to the last information we had available, the person suspected of the break-in was arrested today by the police.
Mladen Chadikovski, President of the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), emphasized that this serious incident serves as yet another warning about the vulnerability of journalists and media workers, as well as the challenging environment in which they are forced to operate. “Journalists play a key role in informing the public, and the state is obliged to ensure conditions in which they can safely and uninterruptedly perform their work,” stated Chadikovski.
The SafeJournalists Network expresses strong support to colleagues in North Macedonia and the entire editorial team of “Infomax,” and calls on the competent authorities – the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Public Prosecutor’s Office – to immediately, professionally, and without delay take steps to fully resolve this case, identify and strictly sanction the perpetrator, and ensure protection for journalists.
We expect the authorities to respond with zero tolerance for violence against the journalists and media and to provide guarantees that such attacks will not be repeated. Ensuring safe working conditions for journalists is a fundamental element of democracy and the public’s right to be informed.
SafeJournalists Network will continue to closely monitor this case and will respond whenever the safety of journalists and media workers is threatened.
Every attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, the public interest, and fundamental human rights.
