The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the threats made against journalist Vuk Cvijić and the editorial team of the weekly Radar through comments posted on the outlet’s website.
Today, the Radar newsroom received a series of insulting and targeted messages in the comments section, including a threat of physical violence directed at the entire editorial staff, and especially at journalist Vuk Cvijić. The threatening message was posted as a comment under Cvijić’s article “We reveal the SNS amendment to the draft Law on Public Prosecution Offices – halting the work of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime”.
The comment contains hate speech, insults and an explicit threat of physical violence. The user account “Miša” wrote, among other things: “You’ll get what you asked for – a club to the head”, also calling the newsroom staff “Ustashe” and “Destroyers of Serbia”, and using hate-filled and abusive language.
The SafeJournalists Network reminds the public that such threats constitute a serious endangerment of journalists’ safety and an attempt to intimidate journalists and newsrooms in order to deter them from reporting on matters of clear public interest, including issues related to judicial reform and the work of the prosecution service. Online threats fuel an atmosphere of fear, encourage further aggression and can escalate into physical violence, especially when they go unpunished. It is particularly alarming that these threats are being directed at a journalist who has been exposed to pressure, attacks and targeting for years.
It is also important to underline that Cvijić has been physically attacked on several occasions, including by police officers. He was assaulted by Srpski telegraf co-owner Milan Lađević, who struck him in the face. He was later attacked by members of an intervention police unit while reporting from a student protest in front of the Faculty of Law, when he was hit with an elbow and a police shield. On another occasion, he was sprayed with an unknown chemical substance, again by members of an intervention police unit.
According to the database of threats and attacks against journalists and media outlets maintained by the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS), ten cases involving threats and attacks related to Radar and journalist Vuk Cvijić were recorded over the past year.
The SafeJournalists Network calls on the competent prosecutor’s office and the Ministry of Interior to urgently identify the author of these threats, conduct a thorough investigation, and initiate proceedings in accordance with the law. We expect the institutions to treat this case with the seriousness it requires, bearing in mind the previous attacks and the ongoing risk to the safety of the journalist and the newsroom.
The SafeJournalists Network will inform relevant national and international actors about this case.
Every attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, the public interest, and fundamental human rights.
