SafeJournalists: We Strongly Condemn the Burning of Journalist’s Car in Bulqizë and Request Urgent Response from Authorities

The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the burning of the car of journalist Sami Curri in Bulqizë of local media BulqizaIme and expresses serious concern over this incident.

 

According to information from the police, the vehicle was set on fire during the night of 26 April 2026 while parked near the journalist’s residence. Authorities have indicated that the case is being investigated under suspicion of intentional arson, with investigative actions ongoing under the direction of the prosecution.

 

Sami Curri told SafeJournalists that he believes the incident is linked to his recent and ongoing reporting on alleged large-scale abuses of public funds, adding that the situation has also had a serious impact on his family.

 

The SafeJournalists Network calls on Albanian authorities to ensure a prompt, thorough and independent investigation, leading to the identification of those responsible and their accountability. A clear and effective institutional response is essential to prevent impunity and to safeguard media freedom.

 

We also call on public officials, media actors and relevant stakeholders to unequivocally condemn this incident and to stand in solidarity with the targeted journalist.

 

The SafeJournalists Network will closely monitor this case and reiterates that protecting journalists is a fundamental obligation under national law and European standards on freedom of expression.​​
