British Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat lent his support to the Protect the Free Media initiative launched by Serbians living abroad.
The initiative is meant to be a show of support for media outlets operating as part of the United Media company, including N1 and Nova S TV stations as well as the Danas daily newspaper and Radar weekly magazine. Those media outlets have been under fire from the Serbian regime, especially over their reporting on the student protests which have been ongoing for almost a year.
Tugendhat, a former Minister of State for Security, expressed concern over the fact that a British company (BC Partners) is involved in efforts to silence independent media.
“This is deeply concerning. No British company should be involved in silencing independent journalism, or undermining our democratic principles overseas. The government should be paying close attention ahead of the Berlin Process later this month,” he wrote in an X post.
Tugendhat is the second British MP in as many days to lend support to the initiative, following fellow Conservative MP Alicia Kearns who also called the Labor government to defend Serbian journalists.
