Slavko Ćuruvija on trial again

Slavko Ćuruvija is back on trial. On the very day marking his death.

27 years ago, Slavko was on trial because of the infamous Law on Public Information. 26 years ago, Ćuruvija was killed. Last year (after two first-instance verdicts of cumulatively a hundred years in prison) the suspects for his murder were acquitted.

Today, the foundation that bears the name of Slavko Ćuruvija is on trial, and those who are formally innocent are suing it. Informally, the public does not think the same as the panel of the Court of Appeal that acquitted them. After a ten-year painful trial, the public strongly feels who ordered, planned and carried out the murder of Slavko Ćuruvija and whose interest it was that the final verdict was not what it should have been.

The new trial of Slavko Ćuruvija is taking place in the specific circumstances of a deep socio-political crisis and protests that have started and are being heartily maintained by students. Their key demand is that the institutions do their job, because if that were the case, on the day of Slavko’s murder, Ćuruvija would not have been killed again.

How to explain it to students, most of whom were not even born then? How to explain to them the photo from the recent funeral of the character portrayed in the documentary “See you in the obituary”, in which a former prominent member of the state security agency, who thought that Ćuruvija presents a bigger problem than the main protagonists from the aforementioned documentary produced by the former B92, is triumphantly strutting around.

It’s hard to explain. It’s practically inexplicable. At the same time, they can learn the truth about it only from us, direct witnesses, but there are fewer and fewer of us because the systematic erasure of traces and repackaging of history is at work. One of the ways is the trial of the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation on the day marking the anniversary of his murder.

Whether it is meant to happen on the same day or not, this trial is more than a direct message to all of us living: We will not leave you alone even in heaven. We will judge you to cover your tracks and with the aim that in the future there will be only one interpretation that will challenge the truth that was established during the Media Nuremberg when they were sentenced to a hundred years of imprisonment.

We have to stand up to that and not lose hope. Even at a time when the dead Slavko Ćuruvija is being tried again.

The students felt and understood well how the suppression of truth and responsibility works and decided to fight for the truth about the death of 16 citizens to be known now and for responsibility to be determined immediately, as a call to organize society in such a way that it is normal state of facts, that would never again call for such enormous renunciation and self-sacrifice. This is why solidarity is now of vital importance.
