On the occasion of the International Women’s Day, on 8 March, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) publishes a statement of support that calls for a gender-equal media and a gender-equal future. The IFJ encourages its affiliates from across the world to publish this statement of support on their websites and share it on social media.

On International Women’s Day, we commit to do our utmost to empower women in the media and support gender equality, as enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and its Platform for Action.

We stand in solidarity with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in condemning any form of erasure or suppression of the fundamental right to freedom of expression, particularly the voices of women as well as marginalised groups and those critical of oppressive systems.

We also call for the financial support of media outlets that adhere to fair and unbiased representation of society, encompassing all genders.

It is crucial that we promote legislation that not only protects gender equality but actively fosters it, ensuring equal opportunities and rights for all individuals regardless of their gender identity.

Misogyny in all its dehumanising and harmful forms must be denounced without compromise. It must also be excluded from media narratives and newsrooms, by adopting strict policies that promote gender equality.

We are committed to a future where gender equality is the norm, and every individual can freely express their opinions without fear of oppression or discrimination.

We demand gender-equal media for a gender-equal future as well as an inclusive society free from misogyny and gender bias.
