Students blocking the headquarters of the Serbian state TV (RTS) for a 9th day called the public to lay flowers and pay tribute to the RTS staff who died in a 1999 NATO air strike.
The air strike was directed at an antenna array next to part of the building that housed studios and editing rooms. The missile destroyed the antenna and killed 16 people including journalists, video editors, security guards, makeup staff and others working the night shift on the night of April 22-23. Families and friends traditionally gather at a nearby monument at 2:06 am, the time of the air strike.
The students who spent the night at the RTS headquarters said that a lot of people gathered for the memorial and added that they also laid flowers at the monument. They called the authorities to invest every effort to shed light on everything that happened that night 26 years ago and recalled that the City of Belgrade failed to meet its promise to put up a memorial.
The protesting students did not play any music and made none of the customary noise on Tuesday and will continue that practice on Wednesday. They plan to lay flowers at the monument in the park above the RTS headquarters at 2:06 PM.
