Telekom preparing to buy pro-regime media outlet

The state-owned Telekom Serbia is most likely preparing to buy a media company which includes a pro-regime tabloid, portal and TV station.

The Kurir tabloid newspaper, TV and portal are owned by businessman Igor Zezelj who is alleged to have close ties to the authorities. Zezelj is known to have made a deal with Telekom a few years ago securing him millions of Euro.

The Serbian authorities amended media laws in 2023 to allow Telekom to buy media outlets.

Zezelj’s company did several things this year indicating that it was preparing to sell Kurir to Telekom. Those steps included setting up new companies, separating assets and transferring debts to the new companies. That would allow Telekom to take over Kurir through a conversion of debts.

N1 reached out to Zezelj’s company and Telekom for comments. Telekom did not reply and Zezelj’s Wireless Media said it would inform the public of any changes.
