The majority state-owned Telekom Serbia said on Tuesday that a small portion of its customer database related to its “m:SAT TV” satellite television service has been stolen.
The company said it reported the theft, committed by currently unidentified perpetrators, to the High-Tech Crime Department of the Serbian Internal Affairs Ministry (MUP).
“Given that the perpetrators contacted us with the intent to extort us, communication with them was conducted in coordination with the MUP and according to their instructions, in order to identify and locate the culprits as quickly as possible,” Telekom said in a press release.
It noted that it is working closely with the police to identify those responsible, adding that the security of its telecommunications services has not been compromised and all services continue to operate without disruption.
Earlier on Tuesday, the website dailydarkweb.net reported that the state-owned telecommunications operator in Serbia, Telekom Serbia, has “suffered a data breach affecting 160,000 customer records.”
“An unidentified party recently leaked a database online, claiming the information was exfiltrated from the company’s internal scheduling portal,” the website said.
The allegedly compromised data includes: users’ full names, residential addresses, dates of birth (DOB), phone numbers and national ID numbers (JMBG).
