Should the names of the candidates for the student list be published before the students themselves do it, is a difficult journalistic dilemma on which we currently do not have a consensus as an editorial staff.
On the website of the weekly “Vreme” on Monday, November 11, a text about the potential names of candidates for the student list was published. The current moment is politically complex and incendiary, so the text caused numerous reactions.
It is known that in “Vremen” there was never a single mind, so in our editorial office polemics similar to the ones we caused on social networks are also being conducted.
Although the task of the media is to write about topics of importance to the public and not to be allies of political groups, we admit that in this case we did not approach with enough attention and consideration of all the consequences.
Although “Vreme” has been a witness to the political history of Serbia for 35 years, it still has room for learning. Whether the names of the candidates should be published before the students themselves do so is a difficult journalistic dilemma on which we currently do not have a consensus as a newsroom. However, we agree that we remain independent, never neutral and dedicated to the public interest.
