TV author Branko Stankovic was refused permission to film a new episode of his Square of the Circle (Kvadratura Kruga) show at the Zupa Heritage Museum.

Stankovic, whose show is moving from the state TV (RTS) to N1 in October, was planning to make an episode of his documentary series about the Zupa region’s long history of wine making. He wanted to include the museum’s collection of so-called Zupa Venuses — fertility figurines believed to be around 6,000 years old.

Stankovic said he contacted the museum 10 days earlier and provided questions for an interview. According to him, the museum director asked for and was sent the filming plan and concept and told the documentary crew that he needed to contact superiors before granting permission. When Stanković asked to speak directly with the unnamed superiors, he said the museum director replied: “It doesn’t work that way”.

The crew managed to film replicas of the ancient figurines.
