United Media, a leading media company in Southeast Europe, has categorically rejected claims that former Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) chair Olivera Zekic could become its company director. In a press release, UM said that Zekic was never offered this position, nor were there any discussions about changes in the company’s management structure.
This fabricated scenario, which was aired on Pink TV, is completely unrealistic and obviously based on Ms Zekic’s personal desires or misconceptions.
Ms. Zekic’s term as REM chief ended under European Union pressure, leaving her seeking new opportunities. In an attempt to maintain some kind of relevance, her statement regarding a potential appointment at United Media is just another one of her numerous media spins, said the press release.
United Media is guided by the values of professionalism, independence, and responsibility, strongly supporting free media and their work. In contrast, Zekic’s decades-long tenure as REM Council chair stood in direct opposition to these principles. Instead of advocating for public interest and improving electronic media regulation, Zekic is primarily responsible for granting national frequencies to television stations that promote violence and lawlessness. Her leadership at REM was focused on preserving the ruling elite’s media image, while professional standards were neglected.
We are witnessing the fact that the government in Serbia is currently facing mass student protests, the largest Serbia since before October 5, 2000. Fearing for their survival, Zekic and her political allies spare no means, including manipulation and deception through tabloids and television stations with national coverage.
However, these attempts at disinformation cannot shake the reputation and credibility of the media operating within United Media, which continue to achieve high viewership through truthful reporting of events throughout the country.
Therefore, we call on Olivera Zekic to cease these and similar deceptions, and we reiterate that there is no possibility of her holding a position in the company that owns 120 media outlets and employs 4,200 people in eight countries, said UM.
