In the first six months of 2025, based on submitted criminal complaints and reports, public prosecutor’s offices in Serbia opened 44 cases related to incidents harming 46 journalists and media workers, said the Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM).
This is a significant increase compared to the same period in 2024, it said in a press release.
The records show an increase in physical assaults and obstruction of media coverage at public events.
Incidents that occurred during St. Vitus Day gatherings are not included in this review, ANEM noted.
The majority of reported attacks on journalists occurred in connection with rallies organized by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), said the press release.
The SafeJournalists regional platform documented a record number of incidents and threats in the first half of 2025, including: 5 assaults on journalists and media workers by police officers; 58 death threats against journalists and threats to their physical safety; 36 physical attacks, including damage or seizure of equipment; 2 threats issued by political officials; and 13 other types of threats.
The press release issued on Tuesday was signed by ANEM Board President Veran Matic.
