SafeJournalists: Protect Journalist Gabrijela Radanović and Put an End to Threats Against Journalists in Croatia

The SafeJournalists Network strongly condemns the threats, insults and intimidation directed at journalist Gabrijela Radanović while she was investigating the illegal activities of so-called “wild” taxi drivers in the Split ferry port.

On 11 September, acting on a call from employees of Jadrolinija and the Port Authority who have for months endured harassment and verbal attacks, Radanović reported on the problem of unlicensed taxi drivers who obstruct port operations and charge tourists exorbitant prices. While gathering information, she was subjected to a series of insults, sexist slurs and threats, including a chilling reference to the assassination of journalist Ivo Pukanić.

Such behavior represents a serious attempt to intimidate a journalist and obstruct her professional work. It is also an attack on the public’s right to be informed about widespread illegal practices that harm citizens, tourists and licensed taxi drivers.

It is particularly concerning that employees of the port, security staff and licensed taxi drivers have for months warned about the unlawful activities and violent behavior of certain individuals. Yet, despite these warnings, the relevant institutions – including the traffic inspectorate, police, customs authorities and city services – have failed to respond effectively. Instead of forcing journalists to act as inspectors, it is the state’s duty to uphold the law and protect those who expose irregularities.

SafeJournalists calls on the police and the State Attorney’s Office of the Republic of Croatia to urgently investigate the threats made against Gabrijela Radanović, identify those responsible and ensure her safety. We further urge all competent institutions to guarantee that journalists can carry out their work without obstruction.

Attacks on journalists are not isolated incidents – they are direct assaults on media freedom and democratic values. Journalists must be able to work in safe conditions, because every threat against them is a threat to the public’s right to know the truth.

Any attack on journalists is an attack on democracy, public interest and fundamental human rights.
