On Sunday evening, actors and cultural workers assembled outside the Serbian state TV (RTS) building in Belgrade and read aloud a statement on Dijana Hrka’s hunger strike, saying they had previously submitted the statement to the RTS for live broadcast but received no response.

Dijana Hrka, mother of Stefan Hrka, one of the victims of the canopy collapse at Novi Sad Train Station on November 1, 2024, began her hunger strike in front of the Serbian Parliament in Belgrade on Sunday, November 2.

The statement was read to journalists outside the RTS building by actor Marko Grabez on behalf of the assembled actors and cultural workers.

“For eight days now, Dijana Hrka has been on a hunger strike, demanding the fulfillment of the following: that all suspects in the canopy collapse be interrogated and detained; that all detained students be released and charges against them dropped; and that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic calls snap elections. A hunger strike is the last resort, when all other forms of protest have been exhausted. A hunger strike pledges one’s own life for a cause,” Grabez read.

The statement then detailed the physiological effects of a hunger strike on the body.

“This is happening just 100 meters from the public broadcaster, which serves all citizens of Serbia,” the statement from the actors and cultural workers added.

Following their reading, they proceeded to Dijana Hrka’s tent to show their support.
