The Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (IJAS) strongly condemns today’s attack on the newsrooms of the OzonPress portal and Čačanske novine, when unknown individuals early this morning pelted the entrance to these newsrooms with eggs. The incident was reported to the police, who arrived at the scene.
IJAS demands that this incident be resolved quickly and effectively and calls on the competent institutions to take all necessary steps to identify the perpetrators as soon as possible and prevent similar attacks in the future. We also note that OzonPress and Čačanske novine are frequently targeted by these or similar acts of violence, which points to a serious problem that must be addressed at all levels.
The ongoing inefficiency of institutions in resolving attacks on journalists, as well as the weak response of the competent authorities, has created a climate in which many journalists give up on reporting similar incidents. This case is just another in a series of attacks confirming the existence of an atmosphere of fear and insecurity within the journalistic community.
Failure to report attacks and other incidents is particularly pronounced among local media outlets, which are in an extremely difficult position. Local journalists face far greater pressure, including direct threats, as well as pressure from local authorities and other powerful actors. These media play a key role in informing citizens at the local level, but attacks on them further aggravate the already exhausting conditions in which they work.
We believe it is of crucial importance for institutions to demonstrate seriousness in resolving these cases, because protecting journalists is not only a matter of journalists’ rights, but also the right of all citizens to be informed and to freely exchange information.
IJAS appeals to all competent institutions to take concrete steps toward creating a safer environment for journalists, which is essential for preserving free and responsible journalistic practice. We will continue to monitor this case, as well as all other incidents that endanger journalists’ safety and freedom, so that together we can ensure the protection of media freedoms and safeguard the integrity of journalism in Serbia.
