After a three-year delay, legal proceedings brought by N1 journalist Zaklina Tatalovic against Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) MP Nebojsa Bakarec have finally reached the hearing stage.
The case centers on a post made on the social media platform X, in which Bakarec called Tatalovic “disgusting,” and then also falsely claimed that Dragan J. Vucicevic, the owner of the pro-government tabloid Informer, had been sentenced to prison because of her.
Bakarec had successfully avoided court appearances for the past three years, repeatedly citing illness as the reason for his absence.
During his testimony, the ruling party MP tried to invoke parliamentary immunity, despite the fact that the law does not allow for it in this case.
Bakarec claimed he had no recollection of writing the post and went as far as to state that he could not remember whether the “@BakarecPolitika” account even belonged to him.
“It is shameful for someone to insult and humiliate you, only to hide behind parliamentary immunity in court. It is even more disgraceful that a public official, funded by the citizens of this country, is trying to claim it wasn’t him or that he doesn’t remember. If that were true, he would have come forward immediately to clarify that the account wasn’t his, but we all know it is,” Tatalovic said.
