New magazine “Kompas”: All the best about the president

In addition to the two existing portals of the same name, the weekly “Kompas”, which promises “analysis and understanding of social processes”, is now arriving on newsstands. From the announcement of the first issue, one can already guess which side it will take

The Serbian media market is richer for another “Compass”. In addition to the two portals that already bear that name, “Srpski Kompas” and “Serbian Weekly Kompas” also exist recently.

The first issue of the new weekly should appear on newsstands on Thursday, March 12. The media was registered on February 19 of this year, and was launched by the company Savremeni media sistem, founded at the end of December 2025. The director of the company and the chief and responsible editor is Sanja Purić Božić.

In addition to the newspaper, “Srpski Kompas” also has a portal, and it appears twice in the Media Register – as “Srpski Kompas” and as “Serbian Weekly Kompas”.

Already at the first glance at the topics of the first issue and the columnists, readers can guess which direction the new weekly will take.

What is the new “Compass”?

When you go to the kiosks on Thursday, a new magazine will appear among the weeklies.

“Kompas is a Serbian weekly newspaper intended for readers who are looking for reliable information, thoughtful analysis and a deeper understanding of political and social processes”, according to the website of the new media.

The magazine, as it is added, fosters an analytical approach and a culture of dialogue and wants to offer a space for serious consideration of the political, economic and social currents that shape contemporary Serbia and the international environment.

The weekly will be published on Thursdays, with one hundred pages, at a price of 300 dinars.

On the cover of the first issue, which will be published on March 12 – the anniversary of the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic – there are his portraits and the portrait of the former president of the FRY, Slobodan Milošević.

The theme of the first issue, whose front page features two halves of the heads of two deceased politicians, provides an overview of current politics, and from the text entitled “Red Lines of Ignorance” one can guess in which direction the needle of this compass will point.

In the text, after the introductory part criticizing the depiction of the caricature of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić on the cross, “in the middle of the Easter fast”, there follows an overview of Milosevic’s and Djindjić’s rule, followed by a section in which the policy of the current government is positively assessed, the rule of the Serbian Progressive Party is praised and the struggle in the street is criticized. The street is also placed in the context of Milošević and Đinđić and their rise to power.

Who writes for the new weekly?

As stated on the website, the magazine wants to be a platform for the exchange of opinions and arguments, but also for a “critical assessment of the key issues of our time” through “carefully edited columns”, interviews, analyzes and author’s texts by prominent columnists.

Among the columnists are Nikola Šainović, former prime minister and vice president of the Government of Serbia, Gordana Čomić, former vice president of the Democratic Party and minister for human and minority rights and social dialogue in the government of Ana Brnabić, and Slavko Dimović, director of the Institute for Nuclear Sciences in Vinča.

The main and responsible editor, also the director, is Sanja Purić Božić, while her deputy is Marija R. Ilić. The editor of the portal is Vojin Jovanović.

Purić Božić previously worked as a journalist and editor on television B92, in the magazine “Glorija” and in the editorial office of “Politics”, and according to her Facebook account, from 2016 to 2018 she was a special adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister.

On the website of the new weekly, it is written that “Kompas” is intended for “those who want to understand and not just follow events”.

What this understanding of events will be can be guessed already from the first number – it seems that this new compass will point quite reliably in one direction.

A new compass among compasses

The name of the new weekly additionally expands the already existing confusion about “compass” on the Serbian media scene, since there are already portals “Kompas-info” and “Kompas info” in Serbia.

The first was launched by the Kompas Foundation, which consists of the editorial offices of the FoNet agency, the weekly “Vreme” and the Biznis info group. The portal was launched in 2023.

A portal with the same name appeared almost at the same time – only without the hyphen. There is no imprint on that site, the texts are generally not signed, and the medium of that name cannot be found in the register. As stated on the portal’s Instagram account, it is made up of “a team of young and ready people, in search of Compass’ true values”. The Russians are allegedly behind him.

The “Kompas info” portal also published a statement dissociating itself from the new portal and the weekly.
