Marking World Press Freedom Day, the Journalists’ Association of Serbia warned that conditions for journalists remain difficult, citing unresolved killings and a rise in attacks.

In a statement, UNS said that those responsible for the murders of journalists Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic have still not been fully brought to justice, while the circumstances surrounding the death of Dada Vujasinovic remain unclear.

The group also noted that crimes against journalists in Kosovo between 1998 and 2005 remain unresolved.

According to UNS, the past year saw a record number of attacks on journalists and media workers, with most cases going unpunished.

Separately, Serbia’s Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, Milan Antonijevic, said the media environment is increasingly polarized, marked by growing pressure, threats and attacks.

“The safety of journalists must be a priority, because without safe and free journalists there can be no free society,” Antonijevic said.

He also stressed the need to strengthen institutions such as the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media, which plays a key role in ensuring media pluralism and minority rights.
