Vreme reports Euronews owners seek to acquire N1, ANN says ownership a matter for shareholders

The weekly magazine Vreme reported that Alpac Capital, the Portuguese investment group that owns the Euronews network, is in negotiations to purchase N1 and other media outlets owned by United Group (UG). In response, Adria News Network (ANN), within which United Group’s news media, including N1, operate, said that ownership decisions are a matter for the shareholders.

“Adria News Network is focused on protecting editorial integrity across its media through independent Board oversight, defined editorial leadership and strengthened safeguards for newsroom decision-making. The purpose of our governance framework is to build a stable, independent and sustainable news organisation. Questions relating to ownership are a matter for the shareholders,” ANN stated in a written response to N1’s inquiries regarding Vreme’s report.

Citing unnamed sources, Vreme reported on its website on Monday that Alpac Capital, the owner of the Euronews network, is well into negotiations to acquire N1, Nova S, Danas, Radar, and other media outlets currently belonging to United Group.

According to Vreme, Alpac Capital is a Portuguese firm investing in media, telecommunications, and technology. The weekly further reported that the group’s CEO, Pedro Vargas David, has extremely close ties to Hungary’s outgoing leader, Viktor Orban.

N1 reached out to United Group, its majority owner BC Partners, and Alpac Capital for comment on Vreme’s report, but has not yet received a response.
